The clock is well and truly ticking and the countdown is on!
For those, less Grinchy than myself, who get excited by the sound of Christmas carols, the old man in the red suit and the potential to unwrap a present or two – there are only 62 days until Christmas.
With a long weekend and a Professional Learning Day (student free day) just around the corner, it is hard to believe that we only have 37 school days remaining in 2024! I have had to double check that number of days 4 times, because it doesn’t seem real. 37 days!
21 days until our production Beauty and the Beast opens to the public on November 15. If you haven’t got your tickets already, don’t wait too much longer if you don’t want to miss out.
Our school value CONNECTION has seen students participating in some valuable learning opportunities outside of the classroom this week. On our school values posters, our students have identified connection as being able to talk and listen and participating in school activities.
Class groups from Year 1, 3/4 and 9/10 visited Parklands High to enjoy the production of Elf the musical which involved a small number of our primary students performing.
Primary students who have been involved in Emusicians participated in a Camp at Camp Clayton, in preparation for their end of year performances, connecting with students from other schools all along the North West.
A select group of students from Years 3-6 travelled up to Wilmot to continue their participation in the WISP farm program where they not only connect with students from other schools, but also connect with nature.
Our Year 5s ventured to Beaconsfield Mine and Heritage Centre. This excursion was to consolidate and make connections with their classroom HASS learning where they have been investigating the Australian Gold Rush era last term. There were plenty of smiles and excitement for those lucky enough to ‘pan-up’ some gold and others thrilled about their delicious ice-cream purchased from Van Diemens Ice Creamery on the return trip.
Our Year 8s had the opportunity to connect with nature and strengthen connections within their year group by having an overnight camp at Payton Park. Students were required to arrange their own food items and cook their own meals. Whilst 2-minute noodles were a staple for many, some other budding chefs prepared steak and salad for their team and another group feasted on venison. A highlight for many, including our staff members, being risk takers and showing courage in completing an abseiling challenge.
Today is World Teachers’ Day. Earlier this week Mrs McAuliffe provided students with the opportunity to write a message to their class teachers. The messages from our little and big people all highlighted how kind, caring, inspiring, helpful, supportive and encouraging our staff are. Primary students presented the certificates in our Monday morning Green Penguin Assembly and Secondary students presented them this morning in home groups.
We are truly fortunate to have such a great teaching team here at PDS. Our teachers are going to be flat out over the next few weeks with a variety of end of year expectations needing to be completed, including, but not limited to: PAT testing; preparation of Evidences of Learning for some year levels and curriculum areas; moderating work samples and preparing end of year reports; organising athletics carnivals, art evenings and end of year celebration activities; and completing final rehearsals after school hours and on weekends for our school production. On behalf of myself and the rest of the leadership team, I would like to thank all of our hard working, dedicated and supportive teaching staff.
If you get a couple of minutes to spare, you may like to give your child’s teacher a message of appreciation through seesaw or via email – I’m sure that would make their day.
Don’t forget to check Schoolzine regularly to keep connected and up-to-date with what’s coming up at PDS
Yours in partnership
Matthew Perry - Assitant Principal
In 1A we have been exploring the past by investigating objects many of us have never seen before like VHS tapes, records, cassettes and an old Atari console. We were fascinated by these items, asking questions like “How did people play games on this?” and “Why are some records big but some are small?”
We read a newspaper from 1983 which advertised 6 litres of ice cream for only $4.49! We wonder why nothing is that cheap anymore?
We also compared photos to today’s pictures and examined vintage books. This inquiry sparked excitement and curiosity about how technology and storytelling have changed over time.
In maths this term we have jumped into our statistics investigation. Together we’ve practiced asking questions, tallying answers, and interpreting graphs. Some highlights have included recording our scores in ‘Five Pin Bowling’, graphing our guesses in a game of, ‘Who is this baby?’ and surveying to declare Chicken Crimpy as 1B’s official favourite Shapes flavour!
This term in History we are exploring past, present and future.
We have learnt that we all have personal timelines, starting at our birth. We have studied shoes from 100 years ago up to the shoes we now wear. We have recognised that shoes tell a story of how things have changed We discussed how shoes may change in the future. The designs we came up with were both creative and innovative.
The Penguin 150
At the end of Term 3, 1C students undertook a collaborative art project to enter into “The Penguin 150” Art competition. All students worked very hard at creating a variety of collage penguins, until we had 150 Penguins. These were then stuck on to a large banner saying PENGUIN and students created speech bubbles for the penguins to be talking about important places in Penguin. On Thursday 24 October, some members of the class and their families attended the Winning Entries Presentation and received a 2nd Place award in the K-2 age category. Well done 1C!
2A and 2B have been busy during art with Mrs Johnstone making Spring flowers, drawing peacock feathers, frogs, black and white zentangle designs and using a wide range of different materials and equipment.
The current project is using clay to make snails and Christmas ornaments. After rolling out the clay students were able to press a doily into it to make an interesting design on their ornament.
Year 7 – Chemistry
The Year 7 students have been learning about mixtures and particle theory in their Chemistry Unit.
Our final assessment is writing up the Laboratory Report to explain the learnings from the Bucket Challenge practical.
This practical required students, in groups, to separate sand, water, salt, leaves, rocks and paperclips.
Year 8 – Biology
Identifying microscopic organisms through the safe use of microscopes has been the focus as Year 8 students begin their Biology unit. Exploring the similarities and differences of the organelles of both plant and animal cells will be our next steps of learning before the production.
9 Science - Chemistry
Students have been finishing off their chemistry unit by learning about the three types of radiation. They will be working on an assignment for which they are required to research the real life applications of radioactive elements.
10 Science – Exams!!
For the first two weeks of term, year 10s have been studying for and completing their first science exam. Now they will be learning about Newton’s laws of motion before completing their final unit for the year in which they will learn about Origins of the Universe.
Connections was the theme of the overnight camp at Paton Park for our Year 8 cohort on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Students slept in dormitory accommodation, planned, prepared and ate their own meals in groups and connected through activities facilitated by staff.
Bushwalking, shelter building, creek jumping, abseiling, trivia night, campfires, card games, soccer, cricket, monkey bar basketball, table tennis, bench ball and having plenty of conversations, explains why our Year 8 students returned to school hot, happy and connected.
A huge thank you to Mrs Van Essen, Mrs Wade, Mr DeRuyter and Kate for supporting the students whilst at camp, and the various teaching staff who assisted in many ways back at school.
Reflective Poem
Vacuum cleaner broke,
Out came the smoke,
Backyard cricket,
But failed to hit the wicket,
Funny jokes were spoke.
Sticks thrown in DeRuyter’s hair,
He gave us a mean stare,
Funny bedtime stories,
Ate too many lollies,
But did not care.
“My highlights of camp were connecting and talking to others. I liked abseiling – I was scared at first but then I did it and it was so fun. I liked cooking different foods. Spotlight was also fun, being in the dark and scaring people was funny and another opportunity to hang out with friends. I would do a camp like this again.”
On the camp
On the camp that we’ve just been,
everyone was singing ‘Fe!n’
there was a concert in the bushes,
at midnight, the teachers' shushes.
That’s what happened on the camp just been.
The School Camp
The nice, warm campfire was quite bright,
Spotlight gave me a big fright,
Abseiling was fun,
Getting burnt by the sun,
But the best thing was the Fe!n concert at night.
Camp Reflection
The Fe!n concert in the bushes
Nitro’s alarm he quickly shushes
Soup’s warnings, all nineteen
On the bus singing Fe!n
On the abseiling crates the wind shooshes
