We would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all our parents/caregivers for your continued involvement and support in our Penguin District School community. Parent engagement in learning is known to lead to improved outcomes for students so please know that time you spend supporting your child/children is highly valued and making a difference. Whether this is volunteering in a classroom, attending an Evidence of Learning meeting, attending an assembly, or completing a survey, your support is greatly appreciated.
Final Reminder: Parent Engagement Survey Closes today.
A friendly reminder that our Parent Engagement Survey will be closing tonight. If you haven’t had a chance to complete it yet, please take a few moments to share your feedback. Your input is incredibly valuable in shaping the future of our school community and helping us provide the best possible experience for both students and parents. Thank you to everyone who has already completed it.
Communicating Learning with Families Meetings
This week has seen our second round of “Communicating Learning with Families” meetings at the primary campus. The fact that nearly one hundred and seventy meetings took place throughout the week has once again shown that our families want to be involved in and celebrate their child’s learning journey. These meetings provide a great opportunity for families to see firsthand the progress your child has made throughout the year. I would like to say a big thankyou and congratulations to our teaching team who have spent hours planning, supporting, assessing and sharing Evidences of Learning.
Primary Assembly
Yesterday we were once again completely overwhelmed by the number of families that came to support our primary assembly. This will be the last assembly being held at the CLC as we will move these events up to our new gym starting next term. Congratulations to Prep A, 1A, 3/4 B and the boys choir who kept us entertained with their singing, dancing and multimedia presentations. Eye of the Tiger was well and truly stuck in my head last night!
Congratulations to all our Values and Aussie of the Month award recipients.
Pre-Kinder
Today marks our last day of Pre-Kinder sessions for term 3. It has been great for our Kinder team to meet nearly all our 2025 Kinders students. Most pre-kinder children have managed to attend at least 3/4 sessions out of the 5 (some even made all 5,) which is great considering how much sickness has been around for the last few months. Next term our sessions will start again on Friday 8th November and continue for five weeks. The last two weeks will be orientation sessions with your child’s Kinder teacher and teacher assistants for 2025. This is always a great opportunity to get to know the faces they will be working closely with next year.
Yours in partnership
Adrian Beard (Assistant Principal)

Freja and Shemaiah: Write a Book in a Day
Tylah and Reede: Cooking

Amaya: Reading Skin Deep
Miss Lutwyche: Seeing my Year 7 improve their speed sheet times!
The Year 8 Materials, Design and Technology class have been working on their model trucks.
Year 9 and 10 Woodwork and Metalwork
In years 9 and 10 Woodwork and Metalwork, students are working on a range of set and personal projects.
In Year 9, students are enjoying reading as part of their novel studies. Students selected from Mark Smith’s ‘Road to Winter’, S.E. Hinton’s ‘The Outsiders’ or a non-fiction biography. They are exploring themes and character based on their book.
In Literacy Growth this term we have been reading novels and completing work based on the novels using the reading comprehension strategies:
Predicting, questioning, connections, inferring, summarising, visualising
Earlier in the year we used the same strategies with information texts to help develop our reading comprehension with a variety of text types.
Year 10 students have been studying Shakespeare in the second half of Term 3. We looked at the play ‘Romeo and Juliet’, watched ‘Gnomeo and Juliet’ and then did some comparisons between the two based on certain aspects. We are currently watching Baz Luhrmann’s version of ‘Romeo and Juliet’ to then compare the three different versions of the story.
9/10 Hospitality/Tourism Class
The Year 9/10 Hospitality/Tourism have been working hard on their Common Assessment Task: Design a Savoury Meal for a Food Allergy or Intolerance
On Friday September 13, PDS took 7 teams from grade 7-10 to compete in the Soccer Gala Day in Devonport. All teams had a great day competing against other schools in the area. Well done to all students for conducting themselves well, demonstrating good sportsmanship throughout the competition. Well done particularly to our grade 7 girls for winning their age/gender category. Thanks to all those students who participated and staff who helped out on the day. Hopefully some of our students have been inspired to join their local soccer club and compete in regular competitions next year!
High School Netball Championships
A record for student participation this year - 40 players, 2 umpires, 1 coach and 1 secret weapon (both scorer and wing attacker), saw 44 of our secondary students representing Penguin District School in the High School Championships this week. Competitive, respectful and supportive behaviours were demonstrated by all four teams, with officials commenting on the sportsmanship and manners shown by all of our teams. Thanking officials after every game and playing by the rules are always the right way to play sport and proudly, were shown by PDS on all four days.
We all thank Chelsea Ivory and Katie Mathews for umpiring a day each – your confidence to umpire peers is commendable.
Thank you Alana for umpiring and Brendan Ivory for coaching the 9/10 girls team to a 5th of 10 teams – role modelling and supporting our students to enjoy being active is appreciated greatly.
Thanks for the coaching and umpiring of Mrs Van Essen on Wednesday where the 9/10 boys dominated all day and disappointingly lost the grand final to Ulverstone.
Congratulations to Katie Mathews for her first coaching gig – coaching the 7/8 girls to a respectable 3rd position on Thursday! Super scoring and supporting by Mrs Popowski – thank you!
And today, the 7/8 boys placed second with Daryl starring all over the court! Thanks Mrs Van Essen for coaching.
Congratulations and all the best to both the 7/8 and 9/10 boys team who will compete at the State Titles in Launceston on November 13.
It is our pleasure to provide opportunities for students to participate in school sports and driving the bus, coaching, umpiring and cheering you on while scoring, we trust that all involved had a wonderful time this year playing netball.
Mrs Popowski, Mrs Van Essen and Alana
The four secondary teams all made finals this season. For a school of just over 200 students, we definitely held our own this year. Chelsea, Katie and Mrs Van Essen were our volunteer umpires this year. As all teams require a nominated umpire, without Katie, Chelsea and Mrs Van Essen volunteering their time to umpire, the secondary teams would not be able to participate. Also, thankyou to Pam, Angela and Lyndal, for your time spent working in the canteen and to the amazing Tracey Ivory for leading the canteen every week.
7/8 Dark finished 4th and had a fun and supportive season. The first time coaches, Miss Solomon and Miss Lutwyche provided fair and fun games each week, even though it felt like byes and forfeits against the team occurred often!
7/8 Light also had a first-time coach in Tahlia who coached the team to a Premiership against Marist. The opportunity for male students to play in the secondary roster was introduced for the first time this year and this mixed team of Year 7’s relished in teamwork and collective team development. Congratulations to Alycia for her best on court performance in the Grand Final win.
9/10 Dark had a seriously difficult season, playing against some stacked teams from the larger Burnie schools of Marist and Burnie High. These hard games paid off come finals time where the amazing Shaun O’Neill led the team to another Premiership – two in a row for Shaun! Another best on court performance by a Penguin player, Taleah is to be congratulated!
9/10 Light finished the trifecta in their grand final, securing a Premiership over Wynyard High School with the best on court awarded to Katie. Brendan Ivory is to be commended again upon his passionate support of the team which again has resulted in amazing on-court development.
All the best to Tully, Tahlia and Addy who played their final game for Penguin in the successful grand final. Thank you all for your contributions on the court and on the sidelines coaching our younger players. Your role modelling has been appreciated and we wish you many more years of involvement in netball in our community.
The collective efforts of the many students, staff and parents make Penguin District School community shine brightly at the Burnie Netball Centre each Saturday morning and we will all look toward 2025 for the next season to begin.
We are excited about presenting our production ‘Beauty and the Beast – A Bloomin’ Good Tale’ at the Ulverstone theatre in Term 4 2024.
Our next order for production t-shirts and hoodies for staff and students will be placed when we have recieved at least 30 orders. The shirts will be black and hoodies will be black or blue with the production logo on the front and the option of first name, surname or character name on the back. The cost of the t-shirt is $27.
