Being a good human is all about being kind to others and treating them with compassion and empathy. It's about being understanding, patient, and gentle, even when it's hard. It's about being a good listener, offering a helping hand, and spreading care and positivity wherever you go. When we choose to be kind, we not only make a difference in the lives of those around us, but we also cultivate a sense of inner peace and happiness within ourselves. By being good humans, we create a ripple effect of kindness that can spread far and wide, inspiring others to do the same and creating a more compassionate and loving world for everyone. This week I would like to challenge all of us to continue to be courageous and grow in being a good human.

Primary All-Schools Cross Country
The day started with our more experienced Year 6s participating in their event, who set the standard very high for the other year groups. This allowed for some of the younger students to observe and prepare for their events. Lots of students had various ways to prepare for their events. Whether it was well-led Dynamic Stretches with Estella (made to look difficult by Lily and Jaimie), or some visualising techniques with Ashton (who definitely was not trying to sleep) or just attempting to increase energy levels through sugar intake, all students were very much prepared to participate in their events.
All students should be commended on the way they demonstrated great sportsmanship when participating in and spectating events. A highlight was the development of a rivalry with Norwood Primary School where students attempted to develop some competitive spirit, whilst remaining respectful and ensuring that hands were shaken at the end of the day (and maybe a kick-to-kick with the footy as well!).
A huge thanks to Chris and Alana for coming along and supporting the team – whether it be escorting students to event marshalling or keeping the peace in our seating area it is hugely appreciated. Another thanks to all the parental support that ventured down and supported students in these events, this gave students the second wind that they needed for the home straight after a long race.
We encourage students to keep working hard and developing skills in this challenging environment and look forward to seeing what the future holds for our young athletes. Who knows, we might have a representative at the 2032 Olympic Games in Brisbane in the works…
North West Primary Netball Championships
Congratulations to our Penguin District School team who were awarded Runners-Up at this tournament on Friday in Devonport.
Thank you to Amy-Jayne for coaching the team and providing positive role modelling to the players. Mrs Van Essen enjoyed umpiring the team, driving the bus and witnessing the singing!
Well done Estella, Toree, Logan, Ruby, Jada, Indy, Oaklee, Rory, Georgia!
Term 2 in Food and Fibre (Design Technologies)
It has been a busy term with many classes currently working on their Common Assessment Tasks (CAT) in the form of a Design Brief. Students are given a scenario and they are required to design and produce a food item that responds accurately. They are given limitations, for example, budget, sustainability and number of serves. After the food has been produced, the students are required to evaluate and reflect upon their performance, including hygiene and safety. Below are some examples of student work, from various stages of the Design Process.
Year 9/10 Hospitality/Tourism – Design a Snack Box for our Staff ‘Snack Box’ Enterprise – Planning Stage:
Students are required to think about the sensory properties of the foods that they are choosing for their Snack Box, for example, colour and texture. They are also have cooperate with each other and share the food that they make so that there is enough variety for all of the Snack Boxes.
Year 7 Design a Healthy Club Sandwich – Finished Products:
Year 8s have been working hard researching and planning for their Design Brief – you may have noticed your child finishing off these tasks at home. We are about to prepare their designs. Below is a photo of Willow and Violet who, earlier in the term, prepared a set dish of potato cakes and a side salad. This recipe was prepared as a part of a series so that students learned the skills to produce a salad of their own when we do the Design Brief.
The students have commenced cooking for The Rookery. We receive donated ingredients and we then prepare soup and slices that are then given to those in our community who are experiencing hardship. It has been a valuable experience for students to cook for others.
In Maths, the students have been learning how to represent and interpret data. They conducted a tasty investigation involving the rate of production from a popcorn machine and represented the data in a graph, as seen below:

They are also finishing off their finance assignments where they looked deeper into paying tax.
In English they are putting together a portfolio of work including a narrative text, a persuasive text, and a context statement. Here is a section of a narrative by Tayla Walker:
As he walked down the train, he spotted something on one of the doors. It was a piece of paper with writing on it. It was stuck high above the heads of people, and with Philip’s short legs, he struggled to reach for it. He climbed up the back of one of the men standing near the door and grabbed it.
“You have three minutes to get off this train. By the time you’ve finished reading this, it will be two. Get off now before you become like everyone else. Open this door and jump out. Run. Don’t look back. Never tell anyone you were on this train.”
In Career and Life Planning, students have been focusing on relationships, whilst in Essential Skills in Computing, They have been investigating the online world and what to be wary of in that space.
Year 11/12 Certificate II Sport & Recreation
For those that don’t know much about this course, the students undertake 10 units over the year to complete their certificate to work in the sporting industry. If they so wish, they can use this course as a pathway to further certification to open more doors for employment.
Over the course of the year so far, the students have engaged in things such as workplace health and safety, emergency procedures and incident reports, the value of equipment maintenance and repairs within the sporting industry, including the service of our school treadmills, customer service, coaching, and officiating. They will also have completed their First Aid & CPR accreditation over the next couple of weeks. These units have taken them off-site, as well as staying on-site working with various staff and students within the school. They have actually been coaching Primary School students for Netball every Thursday at lunchtime for the last 7 weeks.
As well as assisting at both PDS Cross Country Carnivals, the Cert II students also assisted at the Inter-Primary Cross Country Carnival, and they will be assisting at the Year 5/6 Sports Day next term.
They look forward to continuing work within the PDS community over the remainder of the year.

Certificate II Sport & Recreation Teacher
We are excited about presenting our production ‘Beauty and the Beast – A Bloomin’ Good Tale’ at the Ulverstone theatre in Term 4 2024.
Our next order for production t-shirts and hoodies for staff and students will be placed when we have recieved at least 30 orders. The shirts will be black and hoodies will be black or blue with the production logo on the front and the option of first name, surname or character name on the back. The cost of the t-shirt is $27. The cost of the hoodies is $60 or $65 with name.
T-shirts and hoodies can be worn to rehearsals, casual clothes days and outside of school.
Band members, backstage crew and ushers are encouraged, where possible, to wear the production t-shirt as part of their outfit for shows (plain black clothing is required if this t-shirt is not purchased).
Orders can be made via the Qkr.
Introducing Formal Connections North West
Who are we? Formal Connections North West are a non-for-profit project providing all clothing and accessory needs for high school students on the North West Coast (Smithton - Latrobe).
What's out intention? With the upcoming year 10 season for students on the NW coast. The wider community have collaborated to provide all students with the opportunity to find the perfect look, at no cost, to dance the year away!?
