Earlier in the week I accompanied Connor, Romi, Emma and Logan to the Central Coast Council Youth Leaders’ meeting. I was really impressed with the maturity and courage they showed in sharing their lived experiences in relation to the topic of vaping and the impact it is having on their peers and community. As part of a Menzies Institute Research Project, in conjunction with The University of Tasmania, the students reflected and shared their opinions in relation to a number of advertisements. The ads were targeted at youth to encourage kids to quit and/or not take it up in the first place. The insight they provided will assist in developing new advertisement campaigns for Tasmanian audiences. Information and some of the advertisements can be found at Uncloud Vaping. This week Our Secondary students were recognised in this week’s assembly for demonstrating courage across the first part of the year. A snapshot of their courage included:
- Willow for taking it upon herself to help guide another student through a health task whilst their TA was away.
- Ryder for his bravery and persistence in Drama.
- Tiesha for accepting and developing new friendships.
- Connor for nominating for a student board position as a newly enrolled student
I’m calling on parents and community members to have some courage and nominate to join the PDS School Association. By joining the Association, you have the chance to better understand the school, contribute to its policies and procedures and build relationships with other parents, community members and school staff. Please refer to the information below.
Happy Easter to all and most importantly stay safe on the roads.
Yours in partnership,
Matthew Perry

Term 1 9/10 Community Services
Term 1 9/10 Community Services Students Cook with Year 6s and Up-Coming Year 6 ‘Big Afternoon Tea’
This term, Year 9/10 Community Services students have been working with some Year 6 students from each of the classes to plan and prepare a healthy lunch box. The 9/10s have worked hard to bake a selection of foods to freeze. Recently, the Year 6 students came to the kitchen and, guided by the Year 9/10 students, prepared a Honey Oat Slice. Everybody enjoyed the experience. Last week the students worked together to plan a sandwich to make after Easter as part of the final Healthy Lunch Box. Year 6 students have also selected a range of snacks, prepared by the 9/10s, that they will add to their lunch boxes as well. Finally, all of the leftovers will be shared in a ‘Big Afternoon Tea’ with the remaining students from both of the Year 6 classes on the last Friday afternoon of term.
Grade 8 Food and Fibres
Food and Fibres in Year 8 started the year with Fibres Technology. Students were required to create a Beanie, using a pattern that was supplied, while utilising sustainable fabrics, for example, remnants/scraps that would have otherwise gone to landfill. As a part of the Design Process, students were required to research types of fibres that are typically used in beanies and the impact upon the environment. The images below are from 8 F&F 1. I would like to thank that anonymous member of the Penguin Community Facebook page who donated some oddments for the students to use. It was also a great opportunity for me to have a clean out of my oddments! It was a great scrap-busting project.
2024 Inter-high Swimming Carnival
On March 27 2024, a squad of 22 embarked on an eventful day to Splash Aquatic Centre in Devonport in the hope of being the best of the best at the 2024 Inter-high Swimming Carnival. It was amazing to see so many young people give their all in their allocated event, even if they were a little nervous or injured on the day. A standout for me, aside of some stellar performances, was the courage of our athletes to step up to represent our school in other age groups without hesitation. A few of our outstanding performances on the day that should be mentioned were:
- Nixon and Xanon winning their Year 7 50m freestyle races.
- Taleah winning her Year 9 freestyle race amongst many other podium finishes in her extremely busy schedule.
- Romi's outstanding performances on the day, in which he participated in nearly every event in his age group finishing in most top 3 spots.
- Walter was successful with many podium finishes in his extremely busy day as well.
The Year 7 relay team consisting of Nixon, Logan, Leven and Xanon was able to swim away with a win which was equally as impressive as the win from the Year 7 girls relay team of Pippa, Eva, Loloma and Shemaiah. Our Year 10 girls relay team of sister’s Heidi and Pippa K, Taleah and Eva also walked away with a win.
Although we are yet to find out the final results, I’m so proud of the squad who participated extremely well in and out of the pool. A wonderful day was had by all with some extremely exhausted athletes by the end of it.
Today the students participated in some Easter activities throughout lunchtime led by the student board and house captains. The year 3 - 10s raced around the school in an amazing race. Teams pictured below receiving their prize. The Kinder to year 2s were busy hunting for some chickens and either in the kinder yard, mixed throughout some shredding paper bins or throughout the playground. All students had a wonderful time and the student board learnt some valuable skills for the future.
Congratulations to Aydah, Summer and Eleni for winning our primary Easter colouring in competition.
We wish all our students and families a wonderful Easter and thank you for your support!
Congratulations to Darci (Year 2) and Lenny (Year 1) who won first and second prize in our Easter Raffle. "Pop" Guard was our lucky third prize winner.

North West All Girls Clinic
Come along to Dial Park, Penguin on 6th April from 10:30am - 11:30am for an All Girls Clinic to celebrate the North West Womens Gala Day for the NWFL.
This will be an awesome fun and friendly environment for girls to come and play some AFL, no matter how much, or how little experience they have.
In exciting news, Mia King and Ruby Tripodi from the North Melbourne AFL W team will be at the clinic too and girls will be able to get their signatures, take photos and ask them any questions about their AFL journey.
