Penguin, situated on Tasmania's North West Coast is a township of just under 4000. The town is well positioned between the natural features of some beautiful beaches, coastal geological trails and the inland state reserves of the Dial Range. Penguin District School was established in 2014 following the amalgamation of Penguin Primary and Penguin High schools; the two school sites being adjacent to each other.
Planning is well progressed for the school to consolidate on one site with investment for state of the art teaching spaces for all students from kindergarten to Year 12. The consolidated school site will be wrapped around by the recently completed national standard Dial Park sports complex with access to sporting fields, gym & fitness centre, synthetic athletics track, indoor stadium, squash & tennis courts, bowls and golf clubs. Work is due to commence in the 2019-2020 financial year.
Penguin District School is the pathway for students from Riana Primary (15km away) to attend, with students joining us for their secondary education from Year 7.
The school is uniquely placed as a ‘Birth to Beyond’ site, with well-established programs for birth to 4 year olds and their families, through to year 11/12 programs in partnership with our local colleges. We have strong partnerships with local community groups, business and industry. This supports our vision of the school being the centre of the community and the concept of community being central to the school. Our school motto of ‘Together: We Aspire, We Strive We Achieve’ is well understood and enacted by students, parents and staff across our school each and every day.
The school prides itself on knowing, understanding and supporting each child as a unique individual. With these relationships in place and through high impact teaching strategies, our school has demonstrated greater than the expected gains in literacy and numeracy outcomes across the past two years. Students are also supported to explore their passions and interests. This can be through our younger learners undertaking a student led inquiry, participating in a range of performing arts opportunities (eisteddfods, school productions) or undertaking a work placement in partnership with local businesses.
Penguin District School is a co-educational, birth to grade 10 public school situated in the beautiful seaside township of Penguin on the North-West Coast of Tasmania.
Penguin is situated close to two North West cities. The city of Burnie is 19km (a 19 minute drive) to our west while the city of Devonport is 32.8km (a 28 minute drive) to our east.
Our school is nestled below the Dial Range which boasts many well known walking tracks and recreational areas. We are fortunate to be surrounded by a number of significant sporting facilities which we utilise to enhance the many educational programs we deliver to our students. We share a border with the Penguin Athletics Track and Penguin Basketball Centre. We are a short walk from the Penguin golf club and Penguin Mountain Bike Club. The Penguin tennis club is situated on our property.
Prior to 2014 our school operated as two separate entities, each with a proud and well-deserved reputation of excellence. During 2012 the Principals of Penguin Primary School, Penguin High School and Riana Primary School, along with Tasmanian Department of Education staff and representatives of the three school communities, began exploring the possibilities of amalgamating their schools to benefit the educational outcomes of all students within the Penguin/Riana area.
Near the end of this process the Riana school community decided to continue as one school, servicing the needs of students within their community. At the beginning of term 2, 2013 a Principal was appointed to lead the two schools through the amalgamation process. Near the beginning of 4th term, 2013 a significant community event designed to map the future direction of one public school within the Penguin community was held.
The Future Search Conference was held at the Penguin Community Learning Centre, a BER funded community facility situated at the Primary school. The Future search bought 8 stakeholder groups together over 3 days and was run by two external facilitators. Each group consisted of 8 invited members who were each connected by a common thread - to create the best possible 21st century educational facility that catered for the needs of all students within the Penguin community.
The results of the 'Search' guide our Strategic Planning and provided us with a school vision and a set of school values that pervade the entire Penguin community. At the beginning of 2014 Penguin Primary School and Penguin High School merged to become Penguin District School. Our vision
